A VK Web Exclusive: Meet McKey
She is the eleventh winner of America’s Next Top Model and the second winner to never appear in the bottom two until the finale, and now she’s Vogue Knitting’s newest cover girl. McKey Sullivan answers our questions about life as a top model and how she became interested in knitting.
We’ve heard that Paulina [Porizkova, former America’s Next Top Model judge and Vogue Knitting Holiday 2007 cover model] taught you how to knit. How do you feel about knitting or crafting in general? Relaxing? Therapeutic? Rewarding?
Judging panels takes much longer than what people see on TV. Every time the cameras weren’t rolling, Paulina was just sitting there knitting. It was the coolest thing for me to watch. Since we do not have many means of entertainment, something so simple and not electronically based was very enticing to us. So, when we got alone-time with Paulina we asked her about knitting and what she was knitting. For her it was a way to pass the time in a productive way. Just watching Paulina knit, and hearing her talk about it, made me want to try it myself. I fly a lot and am always taking the subway nowadays, and both environments are not always the most electronically friendly, so knitting works well there. I like seeing an end product. I will work on something for days or months as long as there is something to be shown at the end of it. I love that about knitting, that after hours and days of work, you get an object that resembles a sock or a scarf I am so proud of my knitting, but not everyone is as impressed yet. I'll have to work on that.
What other interests do you have besides knitting?
I enjoy playing with animals, reading World War II books, cooking, working out, doing [mixed martial arts], and now knitting in my free time. Hopefully someday I will be able to find a way to combine all of these together. I am going on lots of castings and hoping to be successful in the modeling industry. After modeling I hope to return to school and eventually become a surgeon.
Tell us about the hats you modeled for Vogue Knitting.
The hats that I had the privilege of wearing were fun and unique. No matter what your personal style is, you'll find a hat that's right for you. I definitely want to make some of them, because they would make quite the statement this next winter.
