1) The brioche rib is used as a base for the smocking
technique. To work the rib, first make a yarn over by bringing the
yarn from the back to the front, between the needles, then slip the
next stitch knitwise, as shown.
2) Knit the next two stitches together (which are the
slipped stitch and yarn over from the previous row). Be sure to keep
the yarn over in place while working these stitches together.
3) After the piece is complete, and before the actual
smocking, mark the rows to be smocked by weaving a contrasting strand
through the raised knit stitches. This will help to keep the smocking
even.
4) Following along the line of the contrast yarn and
using the main yarn and a yarn needle, join the two knit ridges by
inserting the needle from behind into the center of the second knit
stitch, as shown.
5) Insert the needle under the first then second stitch
and pull the yarn tightly to gather the stitches. Repeat this step
once (or twice) more. Join the next set of two knit stitches across
the row, carrying the yarn loosely across the back.
