“The scarf is one of the most important fashion accessories—one
that can make or break an outfit,” says Nicky Epstein,
author of the just-released Signature Scarves. This one, in
rings of cozy wool, is definitely one for the “make”
column. |

Every woman should have a beautiful bag to carry on her wedding
day. If it’s knitted (and big enough to stash a lot of
loot ), so much the better. |

“A few months ago, Vogue Knitting asked me to
come up with ‘something different’ for their Holiday
issue. I always try to do something different for them, but this
time I needed something ‘different’ different.” |

Nicky’s done it again: She’s transformed a simple
technique—the yarn over—into wearable art. Like a
nautilus shell, each medallion twists from a central point outward.
A rhythmic eyelet pattern naturally increases the fabric to form
the spiral. |

“Knitting this floral neckpiece is as easy as 1-2-3. I
used twenty-five flowers for twenty-five years, but you can
alter the number to make this scarf as long or as short as you
want.” |

On the edge and well beyond: Nicky shows just how far Fair Isle
can go in the hands of a creative knitter. |

In this excerpt from her recent book Knitting Beyond the
Edge (Sixth&Spring Books), Nicky addresses the many
ways to shape necklines to accommodate all types of edgings. |

Nicky steps back from the edge (for a little while, at least)
to explore felting in all its glory. The result? This berry
fine Fair Isle confection.
