The Kitchener Stitch
1) Insert the yarn needle purlwise into the first stitch on the front needle.
2) Then purlwise into the first stitch on the back needle, as shown. 3) Draw the yarn through and slip the stitch off the back needle.
Step 4 Step 5 Step 6
4) Insert the yarn needle knitwise into the next stitch on the back needle and knitwise into the first stitch on front needle (same st as step 1). Draw yarn through and slip stitch off front needle. Repeat steps 1-4. The Buttonhole
5) Buttonhole row 1 (RS) Slip 1, p1, p2tog, wrap yarn twice around needle as shown (for a double yo), then knit to the end of the row.

6) Buttonhole row 2 (WS) Work to the yo, knit into the yo without dropping it, knit into the back of the yo, as shown, and drop it from the needle, work to the end of the row. On the next (RS) row, purl together the 2 sts that were made in the double yarn over.

Step 7 Step 8  
WS (Purl) Increase
7) To work this make one (M1) increase on the wrong side, insert the left-hand needle from front to back into the horizontal strand between the 2 stitches, as shown.
8) Then insert the right hand needle from behind and through the back loop of the strand just picked up and purl it. Working through the back loop will twist the stitch and prevent a hole in the work.
